The BIG Chop (Personal Story)

Having short hair or being bald has always been an anomaly, but this year the new trend on college campuses is the big chop. The trend is said to give African American women more femininity and their own identity. The chop actually stemmed from previous years when women decided they would cut off their hair to start over and get that same health and strength as they had when they were children. The big chop has become a new fashion trend and is creating a comfortable environment for other women who were interested in being natural, but weren’t comfortable enough to do it.
I experienced by first chop in March of 2012. My friends were going natural, but I was reluctant and afraid of how I would look. At this time, I was consistently putting mousse in my already short hair to give it that curly look. One night I looked in the mirror, saw how thin my hair was becoming, and realized the damage from relaxing it. I began to chop. I cut every piece of straight hair I could find and I felt liberated! Today, I still believe it was the best thing I could have done for myself and applaud this new trend.
