Artist Solange Knowles is an inspiration all on her own. Most assumed that she would follow the style and music of her sister, Pop Diva Beyoncé Knowles- but Solange deserves her own title as an artist and a stage that is tailored to her creativity and style. Solange’s biggest change began in 2009 when she did the big chop and became natural. Rocking her beautiful type 4 hair, she created an image that fit into the natural hair world and Indie music world. Her fashion choices diversified and music her reflected who she was as an artist, whose sound can truly be considered unlike the mainstream. Her 2012 EP was one that blended together sounds from the 80s and 90s and gives a slight Trip Hop feel.
Solange, not believing she is a spokesperson for natural hair, has been a voice in the hair world and has stood up for natural hair against her critics. She stated that she left Carol’s Daughter because she and the company disagreed on the message on the way black women should decide to wear their hair. She said, “I was constantly fighting for the right message to be heard- the message that the way we wear our hair is a personal choice. There’s no right or wrong way. We appreciate someone standing up for our individuality and diversity and Solange is someone many should revere as a style icon.
